Meta (pronounced May-Da) Schettler was born in Roanoke, Virginia. She lives with her three cats Cougar, Blue and Moji. Blue loves to sit on her lap and Cougar must be pet before going to bed. She teaches Africana Studies at California State University, Fresno. When asked about her motivation to teach Africana Studies she said it came from reading Malcolm X her first year in college. Most of her friends are colleagues who are considered "a closely knit" group.
Meta taught in South Africa through Brown University's Howard Swearer Center for Public Service. She was part of the first class to teach through this program. She learned a lot and still communicates with many of the teachers still there.
